Parades and spectacles, changing colours in the park, autumn is the time to visit New York City, reckons top travel writer and blogger Melanie Nayer. In the second part of this post, she gives us her expert recommendations for the best sights, sounds and places to stay on offer in and around Manhattan and Brooklyn.

But first we wanted to know her Top Three recommendations for escaping the hustle and bustle of the city:

The Catskills

“Located about two hours driving from the city, the Catskills are located in the Hudson Valley Region and the area turns simply magical in autumn. Rolling green hills are decorated with colourful trees that represent all the shades of fall. Consider spending a day or two in the Catskills, one of the area’s most popular destinations (and inspiration for the hit film, Dirty Dancing). Hike the forests, take in the waterfalls and breathe in the fresh country air amid the changing leaves. You can get to the Catskills via train or bus from Manhattan.

Newport, Rhode Island

For those who want a getaway of New England proportions, hop on the Amtrak train at New York City’s Penn Station and head to Providence, Rhode Island. Only a few hours away by rail, Rhode Island might be small but it packs a mighty punch for autumn viewing. Buses and rental cars are available from the airport for the one-hour drive to Newport, where fall comes alive along Ocean Drive. The Newport Mansions are a sight in any season, but starting in October the mansions begin decorating for the holidays. Make sure to book a tour in advance.

Closer to home: Coney Island

The famous amusement park destination island is easy accessible via subway from Manhattan. While the island is mostly carnival and rides, it oozes autumn thanks to its position along the Atlantic. Take in the cool air with a hot chocolate while the kids run between roller coasters and fun houses. Only about an hour’s train ride from midtown, Coney Island is a wonder for all age groups in any season.”
