Before TOWIE, Survivor, and The Real Housewives, seven strangers were picked to live in a loft and have their lives taped…
It’s hard to think of a time when we didn’t follow the every move of everyday people catapulted into fame, but one show started it all. The Real World was so simple, and yet, like nothing we’d ever seen before. It changed an entire industry, and revolutionised entertainment as we know it.
We’re passionate about challenging convention and disrupting the status quo, so we were thrilled to sit down with the man behind The Real World, Jonathan Murray: the Murray from the Bunim/Murray logo you see on the screen after Keeping up with the Kardashians, Project Runway, and many, many other shows. In episode three of The Venture, our new podcast about innovators, visionaries, and pioneering businesses, we get up close and personal with the godfather of reality TV and learn how he invented an entirely new genre of television.
It all started when Jon, a TV and documentary producer, and Mary-Ellis Bunim, a soap opera writer, approached MTV with a new idea. Something low budget. Without actors or writers. A real life soap opera with real people. It was risky, but they were desperate; they needed to keep their production company afloat.
MTV took a chance on the duo, and the world was introduced to the reality show villain, manipulated drama, and confessionals. We also had a new way to express ourselves and the issues in society that were controversial or taboo. As George Verschoor, director of The Real World, puts it, “reality suddenly gave this platform for people to step up and be witnessed and be heard and be relevant and be meaningful, and suddenly my life matters.”
In this episode of The Venture, we talk to Jon, former cast members, and directors about the show that dared to be different and turned the entertainment industry on its head.
