Visionaries and pioneers seem to appear out of nowhere, quietly flying under the radar until one day, they’re a titan of industry. But, behind every business maverick is a colorful and thrilling story about that climb to the peak.
We’re thrilled to share some of the most fascinating stories out there on The Venture, a branded podcast that explores the adventures of starting and running an industry-changing business, directly through the voices of the people who lived them. As most of our readers know, we believe business is an epic adventure, and we’re so excited to bring that mantra to life. After months of working with the talented team at Gimlet Creative, the first episode is available to download today.
In each of the six episodes, The Venture profiles a different entrepreneur, talking with colleagues, family and friends, to bring listeners in on the adventure behind taking that leap of faith, starting a business and disrupting an industry. While you might not recognise these entrepreneurs by name, once you hear their stories, you won’t be able to imagine the world without them. Check out the trailer for a sneak peek of what’s to come.
This is what Nazanin Rafsanjani, Creative Director, Gimlet Creative had to say about the process:
“Virgin Atlantic has been a great partner by letting us follow these stories where ever they lead. Despite their level of name recognition, all of the business leaders we are profiling are fascinating characters with a singular vision for what they want to create in the world. In turn, their stories are powerful and will resonate with not only Virgin travellers, but aspiring entrepreneurs the world-over.”
It’s fitting that our first episode takes place in the Pacific Northwest, a beautiful part of the United States we’ve just started flying to. It’s also fitting that we start this journey with a record label, given our own roots in the record industry…
In episode one, “Kill Rock Stars: We Wanted Everything to Change,” we meet the founders of Kill Rock Stars, one of indie rock’s most respected record labels, known by fans for its superior taste in music, and by musicians for its ethical approach to business. Nirvana, Sleater-Kinney and Elliott Smith all have roots at the label. But there are a lot of bumps on the road, as you take a business from a one-bedroom apartment to the big time. Follow founder Slim Moon and current label president Portia Sabin, who happen to be married, as they face tragedy, their personal demons, and a massive change in their industry’s business model. Through it all, it’s a story about making a space for yourself, and putting people before profits.
