Kate O’Connor: Manager, Talent and Leadership Development

Describe your job?
I’m responsible for providing development to our current leaders and putting in place measures to identify future leaders.

What did you want to be when you grew up? Why?
I wanted to be an interior designer – in fact I still do (maybe one day!).

What in your job has given you the greatest satisfaction or fulfilment?
I love the epiphany moments for people! Whether that’s when suddenly someone understands something about themselves or others, or  helping someone to learn something new!

What keeps you motivated?
The amazing people I get to work with! I’m so lucky to work with some fabulous people.

What women have inspired you?
So many! I take so much inspiration from different women in different ways every day. I guess what I’ve come to realise over the years is that the most inspirational people are the most authentic. And that’s so important to me. I believe we can never be truly confident if we’re not being true to ourselves, and for me confidence is so inspiring!

How do you think women’s equality has evolved and what needs to happen next? We’ve come such a long way with women’s equality. Even when I think back to when I was a child (I’m an 80’s baby) I remember the subliminal referencing about women being less important than men. In London’s Burning if you were a female firefighter you certainly weren’t as good or well respected as your male counterparts, in fact you were probably just subjected to a barrage of sexist comments, but that would never happen today – which is amazing! I do, however believe some of those messages are still buried in our subconscious, so it’s about being mindful of all the ‘belief’ and opinions we might have.

What is your role on the Springboard course?
I am very lucky to be one of our licensed facilitators with the Springboard Consultancy. It truly is such a privilege to be a part of.

How does Springboard help our women?
Springboard creates an opportunity to focus purely on you. It gets women thinking about who they are and where they want to be. The beauty in Springboard is its simplicity and the network it creates; the power of the connections is amazing and so much can be learnt from others  – including our fabulous guest speakers. I have a lot of ‘I want to be like you when I grow up’ moments!
