Our World: A new onboard channel about planet Earth

By: Dave Gunner

October 21, 2019

Our World is a brand-new category on our inflight entertainment system, showing thought provoking and fascinating films about our planet.

The channel features longer documentaries from the likes of National Geographic as well as shorter films with a massive message from CNN’s Great Big Story. We’re also showing some of our own videos that explain what we, as an airline, are doing to reduce our impact on the environment. If you’re curious, care about the environment or just love our planet and everything that lives on it, stop by Our World on Vera. You’re bound to find something to inspire you.

Megan, Gemma and Kathryn

To find out a bit more about Our World we met up with three of the people responsible for bringing the channel to life: Sustainability specialist Kathryn Asplin, sustainability engagement executive Megan Welch and TV production manager Gemma Snazle.

What is Our World?

As part of our inflight entertainment and connectivity team, Gemma is responsible for choosing what goes on Vera, including the Our World section. “Our World is a place where our customers can find content about the environment, society, culture and the people protecting our planet. A great example is a film we’re showing in October – Westwood: Punk, Icon, Activist. You probably know Vivienne Westwood as the fashion mastermind who also designed our uniform. In this eye-opening documentary, you can find out about her passion for the environment and how she cares deeply about making the world a better place. If you haven’t heard of Great Big Story, then you’re really missing out. They’re an award-winning global media company owned by CNN Worldwide dedicated to inspiring wonder and curiosity. Since their launch in 2015, their network of global storytellers has travelled to more than 100 countries to share over 2,000 stories that transcend borders and engage and inspire wonder in tens of millions daily. Most of their stories are less than ten minutes long.”

Why are we showing this?

Kathryn: “There’s a rising interest in sustainability which is a really good thing Our cabin crew tell me that our customers keep asking them about what we’re doing so we’ve produced a few short films to answer some of those questions, hopefully in an interesting way. We’re starting with three videos onboard with more to come next month:

-Three steps to tackle our footprint. This film is about our big three initiatives – fleet, fuel and CORSIA. You can find out more about them here

-Waste Watchers. Meet the people working to reduce waste onboard and some of the innovative recycling methods we use.

-Whale of a time. Virgin Holiday’s sustainability specialist Titia Sjenitzer explains how they are supporting wild whale and dolphin watching experiences and supporting sanctuaries for dolphins in captivity”.

Who do you see as the audience for this channel?

Megan: “The Our World channel is for anyone and everyone. You can find out more about the huge amount everyone at Virgin Atlantic and our suppliers are doing to reduce our environmental impact while at the same time getting inspired by some incredible stories about the planet we call home. Our videos cover everything from big things like the aircraft we buy and our partnership with Lanzatech to develop sustainable jet fuel to smaller touches like our cabin crew asking customers to reuse their drink glasses. The content you’ll find on Our World shows the team effort right across our airline, and we’ve got lots of great stuff lined up in the coming months, so keep watching.”
