We’re in a period of unprecedented air traffic disruption and now doesn’t seem like a particularly appropriate time to start raving about the joys of travel. Instead, we just want to offer our sympathies to those travellers who have had to shelve their plans and those who are stranded overseas, and let you know how we’re dealing with the fallout from Iceland’s increasingly temperamental Eyjafjallajökull volcano.
Virgin Atlantic Passengers
People waiting to travel or who have family and friends stranded in distant locations are understandably frustrated and anxious. At Virgin Atlantic we’re working on a plan to re-establish our normal flying programme as soon as we possibly can, as well as a recovery strategy to bring passengers back to their country of residence, both of which are dependent on further confirmation and instructions from NATS (National Air Traffic Services).
As you can imagine, our phone lines are extremely busy at the moment, even with an additional 300 volunteers, and we would urge all our passengers to visit our website for the most up-to-date information in the first instance. If you use Twitter or Facebook, regular updates are being posted on Virgin Atlantic’s respective pages, here and here.
Suggestions for Other Travellers
In the meantime, we’ve updated our own Twitter stream down the left hand side of this page (hover over the icons) and it now shows a live update of all tweets containing the hashtags #ridesharing, #carpooling and #roadsharing. Roadsharing and Carpoolworld are websites that offer a free carpooling service, so if you’re going to be making a road journey and have some extra space, or you’re a stranded passenger looking to get from A to B, either of these would be a great place to start.
If you have any other suggestions for similar schemes, accommodation advice, or you’re able to offer your services to help people reach their destination while the restrictions are still imposed, then please do take advantage of the space below and leave them in the comments – we’ll be happy to update this post accordingly.
