2014’s Most Anticipated New York Restaurant Openings

New York is the undisputed food capital of America, and the restaurant scene here changes so quickly that it’s nigh impossible to stay on top of it for long. To make things easier for hungry visitors to the Big Apple, we’ve picked out 10 of the most anticipated New York restaurant openings of the year. From the star-studded to the new and trendy, these 10 new eateries will be the ones to visit in 2014.

ABC Home Grown

After first opening his stellar ABC Kitchen in 2010, leading chef Jean-Georges Vongerichten last year expanded the brand with ABC Cocina, which adds Mexican inspiration to the original theme of fresh, seasonal fare. Now, slated to launch in the spring, ABC Home Grown will go for a new angle: meat-free. Though New Yorkers are a notoriously carnivorous lot, with Jean-Georges at the helm, the restaurant – which will focus on Asian and Middle Eastern cooking styles – is sure to be a winner.

Brooklyn Fare Manhattan

Its original location is discreetly situated in the back of a grocery store, but Brooklyn Fare’s Chef’s Table – which shows off the culinary artistry of Chef César Ramirez – has won three stars from both the Michelin Guide and the New York Times. Given those reviews, it’s almost impossible to nab one of only 18 seats on offer here. Luckily for New York diners, that should finally change this year, as Brooklyn Fare is set to open a second location in Hells Kitchen. With over 70 covers, it’ll be a touch easier to snag that coveted reservation.

Momofuku Ko Revamp

David Chang has rightly earned his place in the pantheon of New York’s top chefs, as virtually everything he touches turns into nuggets of culinary gold. We expect no less from this year’s slated revamp of Momofuku Ko. One of the high-end restaurants in the Momofuku stable, Ko will be moving to a new East Village location, and will offer a bigger dining room, more seating, and a waiting area for diners (though the ethos will remain unchanged).

Danny Meyer Project at the King and Grove Hotel

This hush-hush concept is still under wraps – it doesn’t even have a name yet – but given that star restaurateur Danny Meyer is behind the new opening at the King and Grove Hotel, it’s sure to be impressive. What we do know is that the menu will be Italian, the hours all day, and the leadership provided by Executive Chef Nick Anderer of the lauded Maialino (another Meyer project). The launch is scheduled for mid-2014.

Acme and Indochine’s Asian Fusion Restaurant

It’s been two years since Acme quietly opened in NoHo, wowing the city’s trendspotting denizens with its hip New Nordic cooking. Now, the people behind the restaurant are teaming up with Indochine for this as-yet-to-be-named concept. We know it’ll occupy the vacated Laugh Factory space on Essex Street, and that the restaurant will offer a fusion Mexican-Asian (Mexicasian?) menu. This one looks likely to open in the spring.

New York Anticipated Restaurant Openings 2014 | Den

Given that three ex-Soho House pros are behind this launch, we’re sure that Den will have its finger firmly on New York’s pulse. Slated to open close to the famous disused Domino Sugar Refinery in Williamsburg, the massive venue will consist of a restaurant, bar, outdoor space, communal work area, and coffee shop – pretty much everything your plugged-in Brooklynite would ever need.

Another project from Danny Meyer’s Union Square Hospitality Group, Porchlight is being launched by the team behind the restaurateur’s Blue Smoke eateries. Where Blue Smoke amped up the Americana with the three B’s – barbecue, bourbon, and (craft) beer – Porchlight’s inaugural location will put a nightlife spin on the concept. Expected to open in West Chelsea this autumn, the restaurant will offer Southern-inspired bar food, cocktails, and microbrews.

800 Degrees

Even the most highbrow New Yorker will confess to having a weakness for Chipotle – a gourmet fast food chain that lets punters customise their burrito orders, which are in turn made to order in mere minutes – so the arrival of Los Angeles-based chain 800 Degrees is certain to be greeted with similar excitement. The restaurant takes the current trend for thin-crust, wood-fired pizza and puts a fast food spin on it. Now, you can craft a personal pizza (dozens of toppings are on offer) and wait only a matter of minutes before chowing down.

Tavern on the Green

Tavern on the Green was undoubtedly one of New York’s most iconic restaurants, so it was with great sorrow that the city bid adieu to the Central Park mainstay when it shuttered in 2009. But happily, the restaurant will be making a hugely anticipated return this year, as a spring relaunch is planned. With an updated menu, new owners, and chef Katy Sparks now on board, the revamped Tavern on the Green will return to its Upper West Side location.

Parm Williamsburg

The Major Food Group is behind some of New York’s most popular restaurants of the moment – Torrisi, Carbone, and Parm – so the arrival of Parm in Williamsburg later this year is sure to please the slavering hordes craving soulful Italian fare. With a menu that’s focused on Italian sandwiches, Parm has managed to bag two stars from the New York Times. At once casual and refined, then, Parm will be a welcome addition to trendy Williamsburg.
