As spring turns to summer, peaches across Georgia ripen to perfect red and golden yellow hues. Picked off the vine and shipped across the state and country, many of these juicy fruits end up as feature attractions on the summer dessert menus of restaurants, particularly those in the peach state. Local chefs love to showcase the state’s pride and joy in classic dishes as well as some more unique after-dinner renditions of the honoured fruit. So, when in the Peach City, do as the locals do and indulge. Here, we give you five peach-inspired dishes from top restaurants around Atlanta.
Head to Atlanta’s Old Fourth Ward and pull up a chair at 4th & Swift for a taste of Pastry Chef Lauren Raymond’s warm peach crisp. The delicious creation features Pearson Farm‘s peaches with a buttery crispy top. It’s served up with pecan-caramel swirl ice cream that’s made by steeping darkly toasted pecans in an ice cream base and swirling it with caramel after spinning. There’s no turning back after the first bite.
At Chef Gerry Klaskala’s Aria, contemporary American fare is created with the utmost consistency and care. The same goes for Pastry Chef Kathryn King’s creative desserts. The Buckhead mainstay honours the state fruit in the summer cobbler, a heavenly combination of peaches, blackberries, blueberries and opal basil ice cream. If an ice-cold last course is more up your alley, opt for the fresh peach sorbet””a combination of pureed fresh peach, sugar, vanilla bean and lemon””served with house-made meringue. It’s the ideal end to a superb dining experience.
Visit Brookwood Hills’ Watershed on Peachtree for a memorable meal that infuses influences from the Georgia Coast to the Louisiana Bayou. Known for its Fried Chicken Wednesdays and Joe’s Jambalaya, nothing tops off a meal here like one of the house-made desserts””including the fried peach pie that’s coupled with buttermilk gelato. You’ll be thinking about it all the way home.
For a similar take on the state fruit, head to Inman Park’s Serpas True Food, where Pastry chef Veronica Mathieu makes a fried peach pie with local Pearson Farm peaches. The addictive dessert is served á la mode with a scoop of vanilla ice cream and sauce made from leftover filling syrup, bourbon, peach liqueur and almond extract. Doesn’t get much better than that!
Atlanta favourite King of Pops also pays homage to Georgia’s much-loved fruit with an indulgence that takes you back to childhood. Seek out the Fresh Peach Pop for an agave-sweetened frozen treat that’s a true delight on a hot summer day.
