Are you a fan of the up-and-coming digital music scene? Imagine a huge gathering of over 3,500 musicians and music insiders from all over the world settling in one area for about two weeks. Add that statistic to over 100,000 screaming fans and you’ll be just about on track for the annual Winter Music Conference held in Miami.

Winter Music Conference, also known as WMC by most electric house music fans, was established in 1985 with about 80 industry insiders present. Since then, the series of events has steadily become the largest industry gathering of its kind in the world, and now attracts the attention of over one hundred thousand music lovers from around 70 different countries. Festivalgoers can experience over 500 individual activities and events held in various venues across Miami Beach and Downtown Miami, such as pool parties, night club DJing, open park concerts, exhibitions, classes, and spinning contests, to name just a few. All of which are, of course, centred on well-known and emerging talent.

The conference also puts an emphasis on educating enthusiasts on new techniques and innovation taking place in the music scene. Attendees often feel that WMC is much more engaging and offers more personal, small scale, experiences with their favourite music stars. For example, listening to Dead Mouse spin tunes at Miami’s Set Nightclub as opposed to an open-air arena with thousands in attendance. There are generally even sightings or brief cameo performances by musicians attending other performer’s events, making the moment that much more exciting for ticket holders.

One of the most highly anticipated events of Winter Music Conference is the annual International Dance Music Awards. 2014 will mark the 29th annual ceremony where the general public can vote for nominees in almost any category imaginable when it comes to electronic house music. Categories include Best Producer, Best Remixer, Best Software, Best Promoted Track, and many more. In the industry, it’s considered a highly esteemed honour to be nominated, (let alone win), and in true Miami fashion the awards are always followed by a massive party.

Not to be confused with Ultra Music Festival, but the two events do overlap dates and are often collectively known as Miami Music Week. Tickets for WMC can be purchased as a four-day package, or “˜badge’, which grants access to all official conference events, workshops, and parties, along with offering discounts on most un-official activities. Events off the official WMC calendar can be purchased separately at an additional cost.
