Every bit as important as your toothbrush and sunscreen, music is an essential travel accessory for many of us, so don’t forget to pack your soundtrack! We’re pleased to introduce our new post, bringing you suggested playlists for our destinations and all kinds of situations.  We’d love it if you joined in by either adding to the playlist or creating your own topic/playlist to share with fellow Virgin Atlantic vtravellers”¦

For the last couple of weeks we’ve concentrated on nocturnal activities, this week we’re heading to South Africa and getting up at the crack of dawn. This playlist is for mornings on the savannah, watching the sun come up and the mist rise, before heading off to see the big game of Kruger or KwaZulu Natal. Mellow but rousing music from some of South Africa’s best, from Ladysmith’s world famous a cappella stylings, to township jazz and soul as well as Solomon Linda’s ‘Mbube’, the original inspiration for ‘The Lion Sleeps Tonight’. This stuff will warm you nicely round the evening campfire too…

Playlist 3: Music for a Savannah morning

  • Abdullah Ibrahim (Dollar Brand) – “African Dawn”
  • Ladysmith Black Mambazo – “Inkanyezi Nezazi”
  • Solomon Linda – “Mbube”
  • Amampondo – “Skotiaro”
  • Mahotella Queens – “Zwe Kumusha “
  • Barorisi Ba Morena – “Matla A Sona Ke Bophello”
  • Dennis Mpale – “Orlando”
  • Miriam Makeba – “Pata Pata”
  • Hugh Masekela – “Grazing In The Grass”
  • Margaret Singana – “Hamba Bhekile (We Are Growing)”

If you’re in the UK or Europe and use Spotify, you can jump straight to our playlist, here.

Here’s a handful of performance clips from Ladysmith Black Mambazo, Hugh Masekela and the queen of South African singers, Miriam Makeba.
