Here’s a question: What do Burberry, Tom Ford and Versace have in common? Well, aside from being among the world’s top high-end fashion brands, all three have planned store openings in the ever-expanding Miami Design District.
With ultra-luxury designers such as Louis Vuitton, Prada and Rolex already up-and-running in the up-and-coming area, Miami’s hub of creative culture has quickly become central to South Florida’s commerce.
Since the concept was first launched over fifteen years ago, Craig Robins – the man credited with initiating the area’s transformation – has been lauded across the business, design, construction and fashion industries; having turned this once-overlooked area into the dazzling international-shopping destination it is today.
Spread across a grid of just five streets by two, the intimate community setting has plenty to look forward to next year. 2015 will see roughly 50 more outlets welcomed into the neighbourhood, alongside a multitude of new art collections and exhibitions as the district continues its rapid evolution, progressively developing into a central core containing Miami’s cutting-edge collection of companies, galleries, designers and artists.
Over the coming years, a striking, nature-driven vision for the landscape of this neighbourhood will begin to unravel. With highly-respected landscape designers, Island Planning Corporation, heading up the construction, this vision will ultimately materialise into large, open green spaces, rooftop gardens, a notable Palm collection and native canopy trees lining the streets – lowering the ground temperatures and providing the residents with some welcome shade from the pounding Florida sun.
Currently home to over 130 organisations – from creative services, architecture firms, and art galleries to showrooms, antique dealers and high-end stores, along with an exciting array of bar and restaurant options – there’s plenty to keep residents and visitors occupied. Every fortnight, for instance, the area holds a community-wide Art and Design evening, where art galleries and design showrooms welcome the public for a night of entertainment and refreshments.
It’s fascinating to think that even 20 years ago this corner of Miami, which now shimmers with a luxurious modern aesthetic, was in urban decay. Empty warehouses and abandoned businesses lined the streets, but huge investment and a handful of savvy entrepreneurs ensured that the Miami Design District would become one of the most talked about luxury destinations of 2015.
